Don’t Start a General Marketing Blog
A frequent mistake people make is starting a blog about blogging, social media or Internet Marketing.
Here are 7 reasons you do not start a general marketing blog.
- A general marketing blog does not solve a specific problem.
- There is too much competition for broad marketing blogs
- Broad marketing has little appeal and is watered down.
- To stay relevant in Internet Marketing is a full time job.
- There is too much competition in this space.
- Clients do not care about marketing – they are looking for people to do the marketing for them, not talk broadly about the topic.
- Niche topics get much better traffic – broad topics like general marketing just do not perform well.
There are always exceptions to this rule. of course. Chris Brogan is great.
The best thing you can do from a business perspective is to focus on your high-value niche blog strategy and use it to generate leads by targeting a great set of keywords

Crap, if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t have started chrisbrogan.com, but then, if you go way back to 2004, the oldest archive on this platform (I started in 1998 but you can only see that in the wayback machine), you’ll see I was writing about fitness, nutrition, and the like.
Every project I dream up and subsequently kill follows your advice above. You’re right that targeting something is the best way to go.

Thanks for commenting, Chris.
You really are the exception to the rule.
And I am looking forward to your book.
